Botulinum toxin (known by the brand name Botox®) blocks the release of the messenger substance acetylcholine at the nerve ending. The treated muscle relaxes for several months; excessive gland activity can be reduced.

Areas of use

Aesthetically, botulinum toxin is used mainly for expression lines on the forehead, frown lines and crow's feet. In ENT it is used, among other things, for excessive salivation, gustatory sweating (Frey syndrome), synkinesis after facial nerve palsy and certain voice disorders (spasmodic dysphonia).

Procedure and effect

The preparation is injected in small amounts into the muscles or glands with a very fine needle; anaesthesia is usually not needed. The effect begins after a few days and generally lasts three to six months, after which the treatment can be repeated. Temporary side effects such as small bruises or – rarely – a drooping eyelid are discussed in the consultation beforehand.
