Juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis

Diagnosis
Juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis is a benign condition in which human papillomaviruses (mostly HPV 6 and 11) cause wart-like growths in the larynx, especially on the vocal folds. Typical signs in children are increasing hoarseness, a weak voice and later noisy breathing or shortness of breath. Diagnosis is made by laryngoscopy and tissue examination.
The growths tend to recur after removal, so several procedures are often needed.
Treatment options
Treatment consists of gentle microsurgical removal under anaesthesia, for example with a laser or micro-instruments, sparing the vocal folds as much as possible. Depending on the course, additional therapies may be considered. HPV vaccination can be preventive; its benefit for people already affected is being studied.
