Neck dissection

A neck dissection is the surgical removal of lymph nodes in the neck when a malignant disease is suspected or confirmed. The affected lymph node stations are removed together with the surrounding fatty and connective tissue; the extent is agreed beforehand in discussion and on the basis of the examinations.

Care is taken to preserve important structures, in particular nerves and major blood vessels. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires an inpatient stay.

After the procedure

Postoperative monitoring. Adjustment of treatment according to the diagnosis.
