Melanomas are a type of skin cancer that arises from melanocytes, the cells that produce the pigments that give the skin its colour. They can also form in the eyes or other parts of the body containing melanocytes.

Causes

Melanomas can occur for various reasons, including genetic predisposition and excessive exposure to UV radiation.

Symptoms

They are often characterised by irregular moles or dark patches on the skin, which may change, increase in size or develop new symptoms such as itching or bleeding.

Reasons for treatment

Melanomas can spread quickly and become life-threatening if they are not detected and treated early.

Treatment options

Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the affected tissue, potentially alongside immunotherapy, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, depending on the stage and spread of the melanoma.

Prevention

Early detection and preventive measures such as regular skin examinations and sun protection are crucial to reduce the risk of melanoma.
