Image-guided paranasal sinus surgery

Nose & sinuses

In selected procedures on the nose and paranasal sinuses we use Fiagon XS navigation. It supports spatial orientation by relating the position of the instruments during the operation to CT or cone-beam CT imaging taken beforehand.

Benefits

In complex anatomy, extensive polyps or repeat surgery, navigation improves orientation within the operative field. It adds an extra layer of safety around critical neighbouring structures such as the orbit and skull base. Navigation does not replace the surgeon's experience or clinical judgement.

Procedure

CT or cone-beam CT imaging is taken before the operation and prepared for navigation. At the start of the procedure the system is aligned with the individual anatomy. During surgery it displays the current instrument position in real time on the imaging. The operation itself is performed endoscopically through the nose, usually under general anaesthesia.

After the procedure

Follow-up corresponds to that of endoscopic sinus surgery: regular check-ups, suctioning and nasal care as well as, if required, cortisone nasal sprays and nasal rinses.
