Growths of the outer ear

Causes
Many years of sun exposure, chronic irritation or genetic predisposition can lead to growths of the outer ear. With increasing age, malignant growths may develop, recognisable by non-healing, weeping ulcers or crusts.
Reasons for treatment
Taking a sample or removing the affected area to determine the nature of the lesion. In the case of a malignant lesion, complete surgical removal is often necessary. The size or additional disease-related changes may make surgery under general anaesthesia necessary.
Treatment options
Surgery: an incision behind the ear or in the ear canal provides access. For small growths on the ear, the defect can often be closed immediately. If malignancy is uncertain, a wound dressing is applied temporarily. Plastic surgical techniques are used to ensure aesthetic reconstruction of the outer ear.
After the procedure
Rapid histological examinations ensure complete removal of the skin lesion. Healing and hearing are monitored regularly. Stitches are removed after about one week. Regular checks at Kopfzentrum Bielefeld.
